The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Warri Correspondents’ Chapel today stated that its relationship with the Nigeria Police Force, Delta State Command has gone sour with the emergence of the new Commissioner of Police, CP Zanna Mohammed in the State.
Chairman of the NUJ Warri Correspondents’ Chapel, Comrade Akpokona Omafuaire made the assertion on behalf of members during a courtesy visit to the Warri Area Commander, ACP Mohammed Shaba today.
Omafuaire noted that the Union had enjoyed a great relationship with the police in time past just as he pointed out that, “ the situation seems different under the leadership of the new police CP, Zanna Mohammed as we have been left out of activities of the Police.”
“ We have been detached from the police press briefing. Nothing is being carried out in Warri.”
While noting that the NUJ Warri Correspondents’ Chapel is the most vibrant in the Country, Omafuaire warned that, “anyone who neglects it do same at his own peril because our pen has the ability to do many things, to promote and to bring down.”
The Union regretted that out of the 11 Police formations in Warri Command, only the “B” Division seems to be up and doing while others watch as “cultism” and “robbery” reign supreme in their domains, thereby causing untold hardship on defenseless citizens.
The NUJ also urged the Warri Area Commander to act quickly about the rising spate of cultism, robbery, kidnappings and other criminal activities in Ovwian, Orhunwhorun, Enerhen and Cemetry road as citizens are being harassed on daily basis.
The NUJ also commended the Warri Area Commander for the support given to the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Anieteh Eyoh in the construction of a “profound police edifice” especially for being on top of security matters in his division.
It called on the police to consolidate on the existing relationship between the force and the press in Warri.
In his response, the Warri Area Commander, ACP Mohammed Shaba promised to cooperate as well as consolidate on the existing relationship between the NUJ Warri and the Police.
