N100 Bribe: Angry Mob Set Police Station Ablaze Over Death Of Cyclist

Asaba – A police station in Onicha Olona community, Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State has been razed by an angry Mob over the alleged killing of a commercial motorcycle rider by an unidentified policeman

INDEPENDENT gathered that policeman, who was at a checkpoint along Issele Uku/Mkpitime road allegedly opened fire on the cyclist, popularly known as Okada rider, for refusing to part with N100 bribe the officer demanded from the rider.

“The cyclist attempted to escape from the officer, hence the police officer released the trigger and allegedly wasted the life of the Okada rider”, a source said.

Another source however says the policeman hit the cyclist with the butt of his gun on his head when the rider attempted to run away, which led to his untimely death.

Irked by the development however, youths mobilized and burnt down the police station.

One of the protesting youths, alleged killing also sustained injury from gun shots fired by police officers and was rushed to St Theresa hospital in Issele Uku.

The mobs were said to have advanced and burnt down the shop of the wife of the police officer, who allegedly fired the shot.

Meanwhile, the Chairman, Police Community Relations Committee, (PCRC) for Delta North Senatorial Zone, also an indigene of Olona, Nze Elumelu, confirmed the incident and the setting of the station ablaze.

Andrew Aniamaka, police spokesman for the State, who was attending a meeting of Fulani Herdsmen and Farmers Committee in Government House Asaba, when the incident occurred initially, denied it, saying it was mere allegation.
