– Mikel Obi wants to be fully fit before making a return to the Super Eagles
– This is why he was left out of the Super Eagles squad that will face Seychelles and Egypt
– Gernot Rohr explained that Mikel told him to be excluded from the next two fixtures
Super Eagles gaffer Gernot Rohr has explained that Mikel Obi asked to be left out of the squad that will face Seychelles in 2019 AFCON qualifiers and a friendly tie against Egypt.
Mikel Obi has not played for Nigeria since the end of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia where Super Eagles failed to make it out of the Group stages.
The former Chelsea star recently joined Championship club Middlebrough after leaving the Chinese Super League and he has been in superb form in England.
Gernot Rohr has named his squad to face Seychelles and Egypt with Mikel Obi and Kelechi Iheanacho left out of the team.
Rohr has now explained that Mikel Obi still requires time to build-up strength following a troubling knee injury.
”He [Mikel] has arrived in Middlesbrough recently. He told me he was not ready and needs to work after his knee injury in China.
“He has not been ruled out for the AFCON, but could not make the match in Asaba. We will see for the future,” Rohr told Goal.
Earlier, Legit.ng had reported how Nigeria international and captain of the Super Eagles Mikel Obi completed a move to English Championship club Middlesbrough after passing his medical test on Tuesday, January 22.
German club Wolfsburg and Italian giants Roma were said to be closely monitoring Mikel Obi for the possibility of getting his signature, but the ex Chelsea star decided to return to England.
