The 2nd edition of Evergreen Pro-Am tournament in honour of the late Vanguard golf writer, Richard Animam which held last Saturday and Sunday at the Ibori Golf and Country Club in Asaba saw over 200 golfers Pros and Amateurs participating in the event.
On the first day, the unforgiving gardens of the IGCC bared its teeth to the golfers wielding intimidating golf sets with just an object in view, conquering this infamous course which every golfer that has been there in recent times agree has become a nightmare challenge with intimidating out of bounds and demoralizing bunkers.
The hot sun measuring over 39 degrees celsius took its toll on players leaving the amateurs shooting an average of 90 net but for two pros who managed a level course par, the rest were left biting their nails and gasping for breath.
On the second day, the best any pro could muster was a 6 over par. The garden of IGCC increased its toll on the weary players who managed to make the cut off mark. Every player had a story to tell, most with subdued awe at the incredible high scores carded but few managed due to dexterity and resilience and by playing stunning golf made themselves winners of the tournament.
These are Kingsley Okparaku of IBB Abuja popularly called Aba Pro who in a deft display of almost flawless golf and a combination of crafty shots clinched the winner’s purse for the professionals, returning 72 and 76 over. For the men’s category, Abib Oyaide won with (76+82) 158 net. The winner of the ladies gross was Rita Izoje with (75+ 78) 153 net. She won the best net shooting an amazing result.
