Flying Eagles skipper, Ikouwem Utin has been called up to the camp of the Super Eagles ahead of the 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifier against Seychelles and the international friendly game with the Pharaohs of Egypt both billed for Asaba, Delta State.
Enyimba’s head coach, Usman Abdallah disclosed that Utin’s invitation got to the club on Thursday and the left-back has been given the permission to report to the Eagles’ camp on Monday after the tie with Sunshine Stars in Akure on Sunday.
The Akwa Ibom-born defender shone brightly at the Africa U20 Cup of Nations alongside his teammate at Enyimba Valentine Ozornwafor and they were in the CAF Best XI at the end of the competition even though the Flying Eagles only finished fourth but still got the ticket to the Fifa U20 World Cup in Poland.
It was Ozornwafor that was initially recognized immediately the 23-man Super Eagles list was made public before Utin got his own invite on Thursday and both players will hit the camp in Asaba alongside with the rest of their colleagues in the national team as from Monday next week.
“Ikouwem has been invited to the Super Eagles too after we got his invitation on Thursday,” Abdallah told Goal.
“He will join them in Asaba on Monday after our game with Sunshine Stars in Akure on Sunday. He deserved to be called up because he has been a very good player and he was able to try his best at the U20 Championship in the Niger Republic. He has also been performing well for us since he broke into the senior team and we know he will be a good addition to the national team.
“It is sad that we are losing him to the Eagles at this point when his services are needed after he recently returned from the camp of the Flying Eagles but I believe we have capable replacements to step into the vacuum he and Ozornwafor will be creating. We have a not too big squad but I am certain that we have the players to get the job done.”
